Elevated pole photography tends to get forgotten in the mix when it comes to real estate photos. It’s a shame really, they are the subtle difference between an “ok” exterior image and a “wow” shot.
If you aren’t considering the use of elevated photography when selling your client’s home you may be missing out. This simple photography trick could make the difference in enticing potential buyers.
What Is Elevated Photography?
Elevated photography is exactly what it sounds like. The camera is elevated to a higher height than the average person.
Most of the time the camera is placed on a tripod that will be a few feet off the ground. With this method, the camera will be about 5 to 6 feet off the ground at most.
Sometimes this isn’t high enough. So elevated photography will place the camera 10 to 30 feet in the air.
What Are the Benefits?
Not every house looks its best at street level. This is mainly because there
We’re not saying the landscaping and fencing are bad, they just don’t help when you want to take a clear picture of the home.
Sometimes all you need to do is raise the height of the camera. This gives the image a new angle, that is above the things blocking your view at street level.
How It’s Done
There are two ways that elevated photography gets accomplished. The photographer will either use a large pole or a drone. There are advantages to both, but we prefer to use a drone.
Using a Pole
Many photographers will either build a
There are two problems with this strategy. The first is that it limits the ability to change the height of the camera. Most painter’s poles are a standard 12 feet. This means the photographer has 12 feet of pole to work with on raising the camera.
Now keeping that in mind, keeping the camera steady and still are also important. This means that you can’t raise the camera the full 12 feet because you’d lose a lot in stability.
It also becomes harder to see the display screen on the camera the higher you raise the camera. This means there’s a larger margin of error. So the photographer may have to take many photos before they get one that looks great.
Using a Drone
When using a drone you have a lot more freedom in your elevated photography. This addresses the two main problems that arise with the use of a pole.

Second, because the camera is securely attached to the drone, the image will always look great. There is no loss of stability as the drone moves into the ideal spot.
When Elevation Works Best
Elevated real estate photography comes in handy when shooting exterior shots of the home. For the most part, this means taking pictures of the front of the home.
Think of it as creating the most curb appeal online. This is the image that is going to attract the attention of potential buyers.
The other time elevated photography comes in handy is the backyard. Often, it can be tough to capture the entire backyard in one shot.
Using elevated photography means that you can give people a more accurate view of the backyard. Ever see those pictures where you know there is a pool there, but you can’t see any of the water? Well an elevated image would have fixed that problem.
